These two simple exercises make up a simple but effective dumbbell back workout, that will allow you to work two different but important area of your back.

Your back is one of the most important group of muscles on your body. Yet, so many people do not take the time to work these muscles correctly.

Many of my clients will lock their elbows when they try to do "flying" movements. They also forget to squeeze their shoulder blades together- before performing the exercise.

The act of squeezing your shoulder blades together is often called a "retraction".



Why is it important to do a "retraction" before performing each repetitions of a back exercise?

This simple act, will help recruit the smaller deep muscles of your back (called rhomboids) that are attached to your shoulder blades. These muscles help to stabilize your shoulder joint and give you better "posture".

Doing a retraction also help work the muscle of your middle back (called your trapezius inferior). This muscle is needed to increase general back health and posture.

Doing exercises for the muscles of your outer back (called your Latissimus Dorsi or "Lats") will help complete your back program.

Working these two large muscles helps your overall back strength. It also aesthetically helps build a "V" taper. When you develop your "V" taper, it helps make your waist look smaller.
