Career Personal Training; are you a creator, employee, brand or business?

We at Bodyphysix have been blessed to coach many talented clients break into the fitness field.

Our clients have passion and a desire to help others transform their bodies and their confidence, but each person is different and may not be meant to be in the fitness personal training industry in the same way.

This page is meant to help those people who love fitness and health, want to break into this field, but do not know where to start, where to get clients, how do they get certified,do they rent out a location or work for someone else.

I will try to answer these questions and guide you through the steps we have taken to guide over 350 clients into health and fitness professionals.

I use the description "health and fitness professionals" and not just "personal training specialist" because the key to success usually comes through specialization and having a "niche".

I am a Bodybuilder my wife is a Yoga Pilates Specialist and Naturopath. Together we have built a brand in Montreal that commands respect and our clients know that we will always recommend them to the proper specialist.

Together as a team of two; we know a great deal- but we can never know everything.

We have therefor created a wonderful group of "associates" and specialists that we work with. There is never any competition because we all have our own thing.

I can transform a Person's body, I have done it to myself and for many others (you can search for me on "facebook" JUSTIN KELLY and become my friend) so I specialize in creating programs that are efficient and "sculpt" a person's body.

I love to create and build programs. My niche is simple: I create programs for other trainers and their businesses.

Why? I love the challenge and with my wife, who loves anatomy and rehabilitation and functional exercises, we create incredible programs.

This primary business developed over time and many errors. I realized I was tired of waking up at 4am to take my first clients at 6am. I was especially frustrated by the long hours I had to do.

At first I thought it was a trade off- I got to do what I love and know, I had more than enough clients to work, make a great living, and I got to work with my wife.

As time passed, I realized I loved the challenge of creating the program and seeing the physical changes in my clients. I also realized that more and more of them were asking for my advice on their own clients.

I put two and two together, approached my wife about the concept of helping others get into the field of personal fitness training and avoid the pitfalls we had to go through in our personal training careers and business.

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS I ASK MY CLIENTS BEFORE THEY BEGIN THEIR JOURNEY FOR THEIR "CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING" WORKSHOPS AND COACHING SESSIONS.ONCE THESE QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED;THE PATH TOWARDS SUCCESS IS CREATED.

So here it is...

CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING CHECK-LIST QUESTION ONE1-What type of clients do you want?

When you decide to have a career or business in the personal training industry you must be ready to analyze yourself as well as what you want at life.

The things that you need to think about before even attempting your certifications.

What is your client "niche" or "category"

You need to figure this one out before attempting anything else.

Why?

Simple; if you are a bodybuilder and want to follow bodybuilders and make a living out of it- then you not only need a certification you must also be prepared to compete in high level competitions and win.

People who compete want to win and will want to be trained by someone who has won and will understand the psychological effects of this type of training.

If you want to help people loose weight- is it women, men, teens or kids, who do you want to work with.

Are you motivated to help keep the aging population moving- this is a great niche.

In essence get a pen and paper and describe the type of clients you want to work with and attract.

Even if you want to work for a gym as an employee- if you do not know what type of clients you want to work with you will not be able to decide where to work.

If you want to work with over-weight teens then you will most likely have to find a facility that has both a gym and a program designed for teens. You will probably not work in a basement gym with nothing but barbells and dumbbells- (nothing wrong with that though). You want and environment that will attract your target market.

You also need to figure out your client base so that you will know what certifications, workshops and stages you need to have, in order to work with this market.

So, before you start spending time and money on getting a personal training career do your homework.

Or else-... you could end up working with the wrong type of clients and loosing your passion. If you loose your passion- you no longer have the edge you need to succeed in this field and help others.

You will just end up working to make money... which is not a life.

My Career in Personal Training started off as a group kickboxing instructor. (Yes- I taught cardio group classes)I transitioned into group Bootcamp classes and soon began doing small Group Personal Training. I figured out what type of clients and what type of aspect of fitness as a career I loved as I went along.

I have learned a lot- but I did spend a great deal of time on the wrong aspect of my marketing and brand development.
