CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING CHECKLIST- STEP 3
Can you tell I am a happy person? (I am the guy on your left- my wife is the cute little brunette...)
Why am I so happy? Simple I know what I want out of life and how to get it.
I also put myself into a situations where I am forced to perform- and accomplish the goals and objectives I have set for myself. Which leads us to step 3 of 15 of our "CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING CHECKLIST"....
QUESTION 3
Are you a person who wants to work for yourself... or do you need the stead paycheck that a large business can offer you?
Most fitness professionals are in fact small business or contractual independent employees.
But- you can actually have a mix of both.
You can go completely one way or the other- and you will always be able move around in the fitness industry if you keep up to date and present and market yourself correctly.
You really must figure out what you prefer?
Why?
Well- if you begin working for someone else- 40 hours a week at a Personal Trainer- especially a large Franchise like Good Life Fitness in Canada or Bally Total Fitness in the U.S- then you must be ready to conform.
If you work for someone else- you will get your steady paycheck- but you most likely have to wear a uniform, work the hours you are scheduled for and if you do not "click" with the clients you have been paired with-- too bad! You have to train them.
You will also most likely have to take the in-house workshops and certification the franchise overs.
I make it sound like a nightmare- it is not that bad... After I graduated from College in Leisure Studies I began working as a Gym Trainer.
Being a Gym Trainer for the first year or so- allows you to get in your feet wet in the industry and helps your build your brand. People get to be exposed to you and you get to prove yourself.
After I graduated I didn't have a clue as to how to start a business- I was too scared to open a gym or even to rent out an office in the Gym I worked at. The offices were expensive over 900$ a month!
I thought- WOW- I have to pay 900$ a month before I can even feed myself? That really freaked me out.. but with time I learned....
While I was a gym trainer I was already with my wife (You have to congratulate us- 10 years together and going strong ;-) She was a younger graduate of my program and had always been a contractual employee.
She had many little bosses and the freedom to decide where she worked how much she worked and when she worked. She taught small group classes of Yoga, Pilates, Fusion and Fitness. She also did private in-home training. She had no large over-head (other than transportation)and loved what she was doing.
She took on Corporate contracts where she taught Yoga and Pilates- the company sometimes paid for it- many times the employees paid to have her come in.
10 people who each pay 10$ each to have her come in for an hour. I freaked out! She was making 100$ an hour- while I was making about 10$ an hour or 400$ a week!
She had about 10 of these contracts a week- allowing her to make about 1000$ a week. She also had private sessions at people's home- where she charged 90$ an hour.
I was determined to find a way to have the same income!
And I did...
HOLY YOGA AND PILATES- ISN'T MY WIFE CUTE!

I stayed as a gym trainer while my wife helped me develop a Small Group Training Class that I could take to the corporate market.
But there where steps I needed to follow- because I did not have the right training or marketing in place...
STEP 4 OF THE "CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING CHECK LIST" Actually demonstrates what the steps I took where- with my wife- to develop my fitness business while keeping the security of my "Gym Trainer" Job.
STEP 3 OR THE "CAREER PERSONAL TRAINING CHECK LIST" is simple...... figure out if you would like to work for someone else only, work for yourself or mix those two up. Everyone is different. Just keep doing your homework.
